2025 VIGNETTE REQUIRED

What Is the Austrian Vignette?

The Austrian motorway vignette (Autobahnvignette) is a mandatory toll sticker — or since 2018, a digital registration — required for all motor vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes gross weight using Austrian motorways (Autobahnen) and expressways (Schnellstraßen) managed by ASFINAG. Driving on these roads without a valid vignette is a regulatory offence subject to on-the-spot fines.

The vignette system was introduced in Austria in 1997 and has evolved significantly. Since 2018, a fully digital vignette (digitale Vignette) has been available, allowing drivers to purchase online and have their licence plate registered in the ASFINAG database — no physical sticker required. Both formats (physical and digital) are equally valid and enforceable.

Vignettes are available in three durations: 10-day, 2-month, and annual. The annual vignette is valid from 1 December of the preceding year to 31 January of the following year — effectively 14 months of coverage. Prices are set annually by ASFINAG and are uniform across all purchase channels.

Key Fact: The digital vignette is linked to your licence plate number. If you change your vehicle or licence plate, you must purchase a new vignette. Physical stickers cannot be transferred between vehicles.

How the Vignette System Works — Timeline Overview

1997 — Introduction of the Vignette System

Austria introduced the motorway vignette toll system, replacing per-kilometre tolling on most routes. The physical sticker became mandatory for all passenger vehicles.

2004 — GO-Box System for Heavy Vehicles

Trucks and buses over 3.5t switched to the electronic GO-Box system, while the vignette remained for lighter vehicles.

2018 — Digital Vignette Launched

ASFINAG introduced the fully digital vignette, allowing online purchase with licence plate registration. No physical sticker required. Enforcement via ANPR cameras.

2022 — Price Adjustments

Annual vignette price adjusted to reflect infrastructure maintenance costs. The 10-day and 2-month options retained competitive pricing for short-term visitors.

2024 — Current Pricing Structure

Annual vignette: €96.40 | 2-Month: €29.00 | 10-Day: €9.90. Prices valid for the 2025 vignette year.

2025 — Ongoing Digital Expansion

ASFINAG continues expanding digital enforcement infrastructure. The digital vignette now accounts for the majority of all vignette purchases.

Did You Know?

Austria has approximately 2,200 km of motorways and expressways subject to the vignette requirement. ASFINAG operates over 1,000 ANPR enforcement cameras across the network.

Enforcement

Vignette compliance is checked automatically by ANPR cameras and manually by ASFINAG enforcement officers. On-the-spot fines start at €120 for non-compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a vignette for every vehicle I drive in Austria?

Yes. Each vehicle requires its own valid vignette. A vignette is vehicle-specific (or licence-plate-specific for digital vignettes) and cannot be shared between vehicles. If you drive multiple vehicles on Austrian motorways, each one must have a valid vignette.

Can I buy the vignette at the Austrian border?

Yes. Physical vignettes are available at most major border crossings, petrol stations near the border, and ÖAMTC/ARBÖ offices. Digital vignettes can be purchased online at any time before entering the motorway network. It is advisable to purchase in advance to avoid queues.

Is the digital vignette valid immediately after purchase?

The digital vignette becomes valid 18 days after purchase if bought online — this grace period is designed to allow for postal delivery of the physical sticker. However, if you specifically select the digital-only option, it becomes valid immediately. Always check the activation date shown in your confirmation email.

What happens if I affix the physical sticker incorrectly?

The physical vignette must be affixed to the interior of the windscreen in the top-right corner (from the driver's perspective). Incorrectly affixed stickers — including those on the outside of the glass, on a removable holder, or partially covering another sticker — are considered invalid and may result in a fine.
